Are we becoming stupid

I have always thought that the Internet has made us so much more smart. Look at all we can discover in seconds. Prior to the Internet we had to run to a library and search for hours for something now we can find in ten seconds. Nicholas Carr makes a compelling case for how this instant discovery of info has actually had a negative impact on how we think. That is not to say there are not incredible benefits too but read on to get his perspective. http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200807/google

Always On Top :)

I discovered a valuable little application that allows one to set a window as Always On Top as well as its transparency. I quite often watch video podcasts on my PC but wanted to be able to open a little video window and place it off to the right so that while I was doing other things on the PC I was still able to watch my podcast. iTunes does not support this and I could not find anything within Vista to allow me to have a window Always On Top. So I did what I always do in those situations: I searched for a solution. Went to Google and typed always on top itunes video. Voila - I found a blog entry pointing to this application www.abstractpath.com/powermenu/. Works perfectly.

iPod Touch Holder

I really like the design of this. Not sure I am ready to drop 40 bucks on it but who knows

What Makes Us Want to Be Good?

I cannot begin to tell you how often I hear from people that we derive our morality from religion. Not uncommon to also hear how if the atheists were allowed to run the world it would come to an end. It only takes a little research to realize this mindset is clearly wrong. Steven Pinker, the author of the book The Blank Slate, wrote an article I found this weekend in the NY Magazine entitled The Moral Instinct. It is clear that we are good by nature and that from a Darwinian perspective it is beneficial to be. Here is the article. I recommend printing it out because it is a bit long for reading on a monitor.

Eye-Fi makes your camera wireless

I love the Eye-Fi. It works as advertised. To install on PC just plug the memory card into reader and plug into USB port. The software will show all available wireless networks. I found mine, entered my password, selected folder to store photos and entered my Kodakgallery name and password. Eye-Fi supports all major online photo galleries. I put the SD card into our new Canon Powershot SD1000 and started taking pictures. When ready to transfer I opened the Eye-Fi manager and voila - pictures transferred to both my PC and my Kodakgallery site. We moved all around the apartment taking pictures and wireless strength was excellent; in every room we were able to shoot a picture and have it transfer wirelessly and immediately when software was running on PC. We received the Eye-Fi the same day we received the Canon Powershot SD1000. What I love is that I was able to use the camera without installing any of Canon's software. I hate all the software that comes with cameras - do I really need another photo reader?

I bought my card from Amazon.com. The user reviews were not great though a significant majority gave the card 5 stars. After careful inspection of bad reviews, it became clear the complaints were either off-base (one guy was upset that it requires a wireless router), uninformed (one dude did not realize the software is on the card), not relevant (Mac issues) or to be expected (someone's card stopped working after awhile and, of course, shit happens and to those it happens to they tend to write reviews). But there were a couple important items such as not supporting RAW or TIFF, and one guy could not find out from Eye-Fi the speed of the card. He believes the card is slow to record. All I can say is that the speed seems fine to me based on how we intend to use it - with a compact camera that doesn't support manual focus This is all about point and shoot, and send!

Pot Prohibition Costs Taxpayers More Than 40$ Billion/Year

I came across this article while reading digg.com/iphone using my Ipod Touch. Considering our annual deficit is $400 Billion I think it is time to think about legalization. Now, that does not mean the only consideration is cost. But do we really think pot is that dangerous?

In the Digg forum someone posted this opinion: "Prohibition empowers the criminal underworld by giving them a black market to exploit. It also destroys neighborhoods by making them the market place for drugs and the de facto court house by which disputes are settled through gun violence. In addition, it provides criminals with the income needed to bribe law enforcement, judges, and other government officials. It's also used to justify the encroachment upon our Constitutional and Civil Rights."
